Amongst the numerous cult classic silhouettes from Nike, one shoe that continues to hold a dedicated fanbase is the Nike Air Footscape. Debuted in 1995, the shoe's asymetrical lacing and contoured footbed were developed to have a new approach to foot shape and comfort. The shoe's tech might have been impressive but it's the looks which cemented it as an icon — most famously in Japan.
In 2006, the Footscape Woven was born, looking like a love-child of the Air Woven and Footscape. The hand-woven look was simultaneously futuristic and antique. Thanks to releases like UK-based retailer The Hideout (RIP) whose "Hamster" versions allowed the shoe to live-on as a grail.
Almost thirty years later the Footscape Woven still looks as good as it did, and Nike is taking advantage of that with a fresh reboot — ponyhair and all. This version clearly pays homage to The Hideout's original versions, subbing-in a dark upper as difference.
One detail that dedicated Footscape fans will appreciate is the use of the original Footscape sole unit. For those in-the-know, the Footscape Woven debuted with this sole but subsequent re-makes were spec'd with what's known as the "motion" sole unit — featuring a slightly different look and feel over the original. We're happy to see Nike doing it right on this retro.
